Welcome to the NewLink Home Tuition Scheme
The NewLink Home-based Training Scheme provides up to 30 training hours in computer skills and use of the Internet for people who are either unable to attend a course outside their home or find it very difficult to do so e.g. those with restricted mobility, Carers who cannot leave their charges, the visually impaired and those for whom transport to a Learning Centre is very difficult.
Currently, three funding streams support this work.
1. Notts. Adult & Community Learning Service
|
In order to be considered for this course, a potential learner must: |
|
=> Be in genuine need of being trained in their own home,
=> Be resident in Nottinghamshire (but not within the area defined as The City).
This Course provides a 12-hour introduction followed by a further 18 hours for those learners who wish to gain a qualification. It focuses on basic computer skills (if needed) and use of the Internet and e-mail. It is for the benefit of those people who are either unable to attend a Course outside their home or find it very difficult to do so because of a disability. There is no charge to the learner for this course and there is no upper age limit.
2. East Midlands Development Agency / Robin Hood Fund
|
|
Provides Skills for Life and ICT training facilities and personal development to socially excluded people including disabled people and older people. Carers would be eligible for this funding for example and there is no upper age limit. We would ask that you work towards a nationally recognised qualification. There is a small administrative charge to the learner for this course which provides up to 30 hours of training.
3. Lincolnshire County Council
|
|
This Course provides up to 20 training hours in computer skills and use of the Internet for people who are either unable to attend a course outside their home or find it very difficult to do so e.g. those with restricted mobility, Carers who cannot leave their charges, the visually impaired and those for whom transport to a Learning Centre is very difficult. There is a small administrative charge to the learner for this course and you must be resident within Lincolnshire and be in genuine need of being trained in your own home.
Places on all of the above Courses are limited and are on a first-come, first-served basis.
The Home-Based Scheme works in the following way:
A NewLink tutor will visit you in your own home for (typically) two hours; perhaps once each week. During this time, they will help you to acquire useful computer skills and knowledge. Before leaving, they will agree a series of computer related exercises with you for you to complete before their next visit. These exercises will revise and extend the topics covered during their home visit.
The total time commitment from you will, ideally, be at least 15 hours a week although you will be encouraged to do up to 20 hours a week. However, NewLink fully appreciates that some learners, by reason of their disability, may not feel able to consistently reach these targets.
Examination based courses offered on this Scheme include OCR’s ICT syllabus, the ECDL, CLAiT and CLAiT Plus. These include Units on: the basics of using a computer, Word-Processing, E-mail, using the Internet, Desktop Publishing and creating web pages.
The ICT syllabus is particularly suited to complete beginners.
If you don’t own a computer, NewLink may be able to freely loan you one for the duration of your training. You would, however, be expected to insure it against fire and theft. Also, at the conclusion of your training, NewLink will retrieve the computer so that it can help another learner.
